A growing number of people are skipping out on grocery stores and instead going right to the source by buying shares of farms — in essence hiring personal farmers.

So I am glad that participating in the farming process and being able to buy locally makes people feel better. However, the comment that often goes along with the "buy local" trend of small, local farms is that it is better for the environment. However, I am very skeptical of this argument-- there are efficiency gains brought on by larger farms, while also productivity gains by growing certain items is some climates verses others. Don't get me wrong, I don’t doubt that less energy may be used in shipping products when buying local, but I suspect that the reason buying local is still, on average, more costly is because there are efficiency losses involved in this type of farming.

Any thoughts?
